An IBCLC is an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant. They are specialists and advanced practice clinicians in lactation/breastfeeding. The amount of certifications can be confusing, but other certifications such as certified lactation counselor or lactation educator have limited education somewhere between 20-40 hours total.

An IBCLC however, must go through a minimum of 90 hours of lactation specific education as well as either obtaining a health science degree or 14 health science courses. They also have to have either 1000 hours experience with supporting breastfeeding moms or a minimum of 300 directly supervised clinical hours. After they have accomplished these they can then sit for the extensive board exam and become board certified.
